    Wimbledon Diary: Day Two

Very, very Tired as per previous entry. Up early for local radio crosses at 7:00am and after that blearly-eyed finish to the longest day at Wimbledon, coffee is non-negotiable.

Post-caffeine things appear much improved, and the day is shaping as almost perfect, a light breeze, blue skies and a forecast top of 26 degrees.

An amazing day yesterday... the world's sporting attention may be on South Africa, but rarely can there have been a better opening day at SW19.

So, after dumping my bags and a brief chat with my now seven-year-old daughter on her birthday in Melbourne, I slip, slop, slap and sidle off to Court 12 to watch 'new Aussie' Anastasia Rodionova play a hopeful Brit Anne Keothavong.

It's an intriguing match of nationalities given Rodionova was born and raised in Russia, while Keothavong was born and raised in East London to Laotian parents.

They moved to Hackney in London's East End to escape the Vietnam War.

Rodionova recently became an Aussie at ceremony in Melbourne where she now lives with her long-time partner Lorne Padman.

And she even has a little Aussie flag on her cap.

Anyway, enough of the history. Keothavong took the first set against an increasingly irritated 'new Aussie' and seemed set to provide the local crowd with some cheer after a paltry opening day.

But the 'new Aussie' hit back to break early in the next set and led 3-1 before some more line calls and her own game irritated her to the point that she nearly let Keothavong back in.

But she didn't and then proceeded to blast her way to take the set and level the match.

It's a tetchy match and now it's Keothavong's turn to get tetchy with a line judge.

"It's just not good enough. What are you doing lady? That's just rubbish."

Presumably this wasn't directed at her own rather meek second set.

Then the ultimate ignominy for Rodionova on break point down in the opening game of the final set... a net cord dribbles over to deliver the decisive point.

A mis-hit forehand and after 15 minutes, it was a double break, and while the towel wasn't thrown, the former Russian saw fit to put her head in it.

Moments later, a slip betrayed Rodionova's penchant for the red clay and then another line call hotly disputed... and it's the same lineswoman who incurred the wrath of Keothavong.

"It's not fair" Rodionova tells the umpire. Surely her parents told her about that?

Fair or not, Rodionova wouldn't give in, she got a break back... then after an epic eighth game that lasted a quarter of an hour and 10 deuces, she was back on level terms with... you guessed it... a net chord.

And then in a flash it was over and the Australian had somehow dug her way out of a hole and into the second round.

It took two hours and 20 minutes to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, but I expect she thought it was worth every minute.

For the Brits... well it was just more pressure onto the men's fourth seed.

In the meanwhile, Sam Stosur had done a Lleyton and lost the first set against sturdily built Estonian Kaia Kinepi on Court 18... a player who herself had once been ranked as high as the court.

The Australian was broken in the first game of the second but hit back immediately with an exquisite drop shot.

Surely the great women's hope would fall at the first hurdle!

"What is going on?" shouts Sam as a wide forehand gives Kinepi break point at 3-3.

The Estonian needs no further invitation and at 4-3 and a set has the match on her terms.

Stosur faces three match points on her own serve and saves them all, 'Hewitt like'... but that's where the similarity ends as Kinepi takes the match in straight sets, and all the hopes that Stosur could translate her form from clay to grass were gone

And so was another Australian who was gone so quickly, you'd hardly have known she was there. And so we're down to five.

Tomorrow may be England's D-Day (it plays Slovenia in South Africa), but today was the first day of Murray Mania, as the Scot/Brit hit Court One to start another year of hope and longing for local tennis followers.

Many of the same followers no doubt who sat forlornly at Melbourne Park in January to see the Scot/Brit given a lesson in finals once again by Mr Federer.

Murray was an easy winner today anyway, as was Rafa Nadal. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams both breezed through to the next round.

The sun was setting on a beautiful day as Fernando Verdasco made an early exit from the tournament.

And as John Inverdale suggested on the BBC that "as last night's tennis was so successful", maybe Wimbledon should look at instigating a night session.
